all facets of the customer's operations!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Understand&lt;/b&gt; the financial stability of a carrier!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Are &lt;b&gt;Carriers Pricing&lt;/b&gt; the premium to the risk?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Understand the &lt;b&gt;specific needs and operations&lt;/b&gt; of each customer!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Deliver valu&lt;/b&gt;e!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Develop a &lt;b&gt;strong rapport&lt;/b&gt; and &lt;b&gt;sustained relationship&lt;/b&gt;!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Communicate&lt;/b&gt; with insureds!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Service&lt;/b&gt; is a competitive advantage!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Provide "&lt;b&gt;Control Consultations&lt;/b&gt;" and "&lt;b&gt;Investigative Consultations&lt;/b&gt;"!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Increase the &lt;b&gt;amount of time&lt;/b&gt; worked on each account!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Visit client&lt;/b&gt;s on a regular basis!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Educate&lt;/b&gt; your customers!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Use online systems&lt;/b&gt;!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Attend industry events&lt;/b&gt; value the P&amp;amp;C marketplace bring to Countries, Organizations, Populations, Individuals, etc.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to &lt;a href="http://insurancenewsnet.com/"&gt;Insurancenewsnet.com&lt;/a&gt;, "The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Feb. 27 -- one of the five strongest quakes recorded in the past century -- could be the costliest ever if the insured losses come in at the high end of early estimations". &amp;nbsp;Estimates insured losses cold be between $3 and $8 billion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An article published in &lt;a href="http://pr-insider.com/"&gt;PR-insider.com&lt;/a&gt; states that "Fitch Ratings believes that the Chilean property/casualty insurance industry will likely be able to absorb losses from the earthquake and Tsunami that hit the central-south part of Chile on Feb. 27". &amp;nbsp;Fitch continues to say that profitability ratios will be negatively impacted for the industry and that "the 2010 fiscal year could end with net losses and higher leverage ratios".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those in Chile who had the foresight to evaluate the "Cat Risk" of living and doing business in a region prone to earthquakes, the payments from their carriers will be essential for&amp;nbsp;restoration of business and life. &amp;nbsp;Timely payment of claims is both expected and traditionally the norm. &amp;nbsp;This is what the coverage is for!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our meeting's discussions also drifted to the current plethora of proposed governmental legislation, regulation and controls facing the P&amp;amp;C Industry. &amp;nbsp;It has been out position that the P&amp;amp;C Industry is systemically sound. &amp;nbsp;While all industries have their problems, and parties that abuse the systems, the P&amp;amp;C Industry sets a good example for acting and reacting well to dealing with needs and problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Washington's ongoing problems with FEMA and other agencies - &lt;a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/24/fema-misspent-millions-in_n_220487.html"&gt;See The Huffington Post&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;- suggests that rather than attacking the P&amp;amp;C Industry, the Government Entities&amp;nbsp;should work with, and learn from, the P&amp;amp;C Industry. &amp;nbsp;The use of improved &lt;b&gt;"cat. models"&lt;/b&gt; titled "&lt;a href="http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2009/12/23/106182.htm"&gt;Top 7 High-Growth Industries and Their Unique Insurance Needs&lt;/a&gt;". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This article isolated &lt;b&gt;seven growth industries&lt;/b&gt; and pointed out that each had at least one unique risk and coverage need. &amp;nbsp;Our discussion turned to assisting&amp;nbsp;carriers&amp;nbsp;and brokers work with existing and potential clients to uncover the "&lt;b&gt;unique insurance needs&lt;/b&gt;". &amp;nbsp;We realized how important it is to fully understand the nuances of industries, organizations, and their product and/or service lines.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the seven growth industries included in the article was "&lt;b&gt;Home Health Care Service&lt;/b&gt;". &amp;nbsp;The article pointed out four risk considerations that we may not considered:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&amp;nbsp;Medical Malpractice&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&amp;nbsp;Sexual Assault &amp;amp; Powers &amp;amp; Associates study reported by National Underwriter p&amp;amp;c titled "Agents Give Most Business To Insurers That Satisfy". &amp;nbsp;The recap stated that agents give their business to "insurers who provide contact people, prices, products, and other factors they like..."! &amp;nbsp;While our first reaction was"That's obvious", further review lead to additional considerations. &amp;nbsp;These included:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;A wide "point gap" was reported in the rankings of insurers. &amp;nbsp;What it takes to attract business must not have been obvious to, or a concern of, those insurers with lower rankings!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;Policyholders have a stronger bond with agents than with insurers. &amp;nbsp;The closer the contact the closer the bond!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;According to Jeremy Bowers of J.D. Powers, the bond between insured and the agents makes "it essential for insurers to satisfy their appointed agents".&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;The more frequent the contact by the insurer with the agents, the greater the satisfaction!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;While these results may seem obvious, one of our affiliates pointed out that the same rules hold true between agents and their clients. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;Clients equally gravitate, and stay with, agents who provide contact, pricing, products, and other factors they like.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;Clients tend to have a stronger bond with the agent than the agency.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;Agencies must satisfy their agents to maximize retention.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;Agents need to keep in frequent contact with clients.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;We wrapped up the meeting realizing that we are all both Customers and Providers. &amp;nbsp;We must all learn and play by the same rules to succeed! &amp;nbsp;It's back to "Do unto other as you would have others do unto you! &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;NOTE:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: white;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;We, with BenefitPlace &amp;amp; and &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-home.html"&gt;Vesta Worksite&lt;/a&gt;, the topic drifted to small busineses,&amp;nbsp;their owners, and E&amp;amp;O Coverage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Small business represents over 99.7 % of all employer firms and employs just over half of all private sector employees according to the "Insurance Journal". &amp;nbsp;The question was asked, "How many of these employers have been introduced to the potential need for E&amp;amp;O Coverage?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of our affiliates pointed out an article in the &lt;i&gt;National Underwriter&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;- Property &amp;amp; Casualty,&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;Nov. 9, 2009 that emphasized the needs of self-employed and small business owners for E&amp;amp;O Insurance. &amp;nbsp;On Jan. 13, 2010 the &lt;i&gt;Insurance Networking News&lt;/i&gt; Communications</title><content type='html'>Recently we at &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-pandc-home.html"&gt;Vesta p&amp;amp;c&lt;/a&gt; had a meeting with our affiliates, &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/"&gt;BenefitPlace&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-home.html"&gt;Vesta Worksite&lt;/a&gt; to discuss a recent study about employee disability insurance sponsored by Northwestern Mutual and performed by Harris Interactive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Quite simply, the results showed that only 10% of the 2,100 workers responding were insured for disability with 30% receiving the coverage through the worksite. &amp;nbsp;In addition, nearly 80% of the respondents indicated they would be "&lt;b&gt;Devastated&lt;/b&gt;" if a disability prevented them from working. &amp;nbsp;EmployeeBenefit News", in covering the study, pointed out that it was ironic that "73% of the respondents have insured their home or rental property and 88% have auto insurance".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The participation in our discussion was interesting:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Worksite Specialists&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; pointed out that while they encourage Employers to offer disability (DI) coverage, many Employers are reluctant to make voluntary DI Plans available and believe the additional protection will encourage employees to stay off the job and negatively impact on their Workers' Comp. &amp;nbsp;It was also indicated that many Employers do not believe Employees would be willing to participate at their own cost and discretion.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Employee Benefit Specialist&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;, working with the "Core Benefits", indicated that Employers were cutting back on Employer paid DI plans to focus their contributions to the Health Plans. &amp;nbsp;It was further indicated they had only a limited knowledge about the Worksite/Voluntary Plans that could be offered to the Employees.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;The P&amp;amp;C Group&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt; indicated that Employers complain about Worker'Comp costs and yet are often reluctant to implement a well planned and sponsored safety plan. &amp;nbsp;It was also indicated that P&amp;amp;C brokers seldom interface with the Health &amp;amp; Life Brokers, Core or Worksite, to discuss disabilities and coverages.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Worksite, Core Benefit &amp;amp; P&amp;amp;C&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Contributors&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;all agreed that Employees: have little information about the impact of disabilities on the Employers costs; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"&gt;During recent meetings with our affiliates&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/"&gt;BenefitPlace&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;and&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-home.html"&gt;Vesta Worksite&lt;/a&gt;, as well as several Brokers, we at &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-pandc-home.html"&gt;Vesta p&amp;amp;c&lt;/a&gt; further discussed the concept of P&amp;amp;C Brokers working more closely with Traditional Employee Benefit and Worksite/Voluntary Benefit Specialists. &amp;nbsp;Six specific ideas are worth passing along:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Talk to client(s) with whom you have a good relationship and find out who they work with in the complementary insurance/benefits industries, explain your reason for asking, and ask permission to contact the broker.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Contact the&amp;nbsp;referred&amp;nbsp;broker(s) and determine if there is a potential for working together without a conflict of interest and that they are not a competitor.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Once a preliminary relationship is established with a&amp;nbsp;complementary&amp;nbsp;broker, select a specific number of client's, or potential clients, that &lt;b&gt;you and they&lt;/b&gt; will contact for meetings.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Discuss the division of revenues generated when business is generated, "Splits", based on time and effort required to close and maintain the accounts. &amp;nbsp;It was suggested that these discussions should lead to&amp;nbsp;guidelines. &amp;nbsp;Formal agreements should be set on a case-by-case basis.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Meet with the client, or potential client, together. &amp;nbsp;Pre-determine and practice how the meetings will be conducted; the questions to be asked; and the specific programs, products and/or services you intend to discuss. &amp;nbsp;Prior to meetings, you should have discussed the specific carriers that will be&amp;nbsp;recommended.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Following the meetings, review the results and formalize the&amp;nbsp;responsibilities&amp;nbsp;for follow-up!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Please share your ideas on working together and "Cross-Selling"! &amp;nbsp;Have a Great Week! &amp;nbsp; Worksite Benefit Specialists</title><content type='html'>Vesta p&amp;amp;c, works with two close&amp;nbsp;affiliates, &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/"&gt;BenefitPlace&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-home.html"&gt;Vesta Worksite&lt;/a&gt;. &amp;nbsp;During recent discussions about Insurance and Employee Benefits Marketing interaction and integration, a reasonable question was tabled by our P&amp;amp;C Group: "Is their inherent value for the Client Organization, their &amp;nbsp;Employees, and the P&amp;amp;C Broker for working with Employee Benefit Specialists(EBS) Brokers and Worksite Benefit Specialists(WBS)" - in this case specifically the WBS. &amp;nbsp;While there were a number of opinions and concerns, there were some common areas on agreement:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Broker who has the existing account is considered a "Trusted Advisor" and in that position must be extremely cautious when introducing programs, products, and services outside of their areas of expertise. &amp;nbsp;The Client,&amp;nbsp;their&amp;nbsp;employees and relationship could be jeopardized.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;If the P &amp;amp;C Broker has&amp;nbsp;completed due diligence and is comfortable with the Worksite Broker, the Carriers utilized, and the types of plans offered, the client may be better served with by introduction.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Clients are often overwhelmed by "Cold Calls" from the Carriers and Brokers in the Worksite Benefits Marketplace. &amp;nbsp;As a "Trusted Advisor" the professional input and advise from a person in the insurance industry is appreciated and adds value to the relationship.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Brokers - P&amp;amp;C, EBS, and WBS - are all in the business of "Risk Management" for their clients. &amp;nbsp;Whenever the different areas of expertise can join together to reduce the risk for the Client and Employees, all parties will benefit.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;WBS often assist in opening lines of communication between the Employer and the Employees during the enrollment process. &amp;nbsp;These communications can be an excellent time for the introduction of wellness, safety, and other loss prevention plans.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;As long as there is full disclosure, "transparency", when making a&amp;nbsp;referral&amp;nbsp;to the client, value-added revenue streams can be&amp;nbsp;established&amp;nbsp;for the participating Brokers. &amp;nbsp;The division of&amp;nbsp;commissions&amp;nbsp;or fees, "Splits", &amp;nbsp;should be agreed upon in advance and in writing.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Tracking the activities of the referred Broker with the Client is essential to preserving relationships and K&lt;b&gt;eeping the Trust&lt;/b&gt;!&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;We at Vesta p&amp;amp;c appreciate your input on the above to help better assist the Insurance and Benefits Marketplace. &amp;nbsp;&lt;b&gt;Have a Great Week! &lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp; and &lt;a href="http://www.benefitplace.biz/vesta-worksite/index.html"&gt;Vesta Worksite&lt;/a&gt;. &amp;nbsp;One basic mission of each entity is to provide risk management for Organizations and Individuals. &amp;nbsp;While increased referrals are often discussed, they occur on a limited basis. &amp;nbsp;I'd like to suggest this is true of the P&amp;amp;C and Wealth Management industries in general.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While both P&amp;amp;C Risk Managers and Wealth Managers (CFPs and others) attempt to mitigate the risk for their clients and insurance based plans are often the major tool, the two parties tend to work in different worlds with the same clients. &amp;nbsp;It would be a tremendous failure for the advisors in "sister industries", and the client, to see assets that were accumulated over years evaporate overnight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We at Vesta have been able to isolate several reasons for the reluctance of advisors to discuss the alternative risks with clients and to make referrals:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;A lack of general knowledge about the sister industry - they are quite different.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;A lack of qualified professional contacts in the sister industry to whom they are comfortable in making a referral.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The question of licensing and compensation.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Fear of litigation and increased professional liability generated from the referral.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Fear of client loss.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;While all of the above reasons have some level of validity, they can be overcome to the betterment of all parties, the clients and the advisors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We would like to suggest that the "Risk" to all parties in not creating these professional relationships is far outweighed by the value created. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We, and our readers, would appreciate your thoughts on the above! &amp;nbsp;Have a Great Week!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; BenefitPlace</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14637449074648287112</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='32' height='29' src='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XnqIcmO5mOk/TQjiXikXagI/AAAAAAAAADk/Kpvo_6qKn-8/S220/IMG%2BPWE.JPG'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8708817845701224462.post-1510885555476278053</id><published>2009-11-13T09:01:00.000-08:00</published><updated>2009-11-13T09:01:57.639-08:00</updated><title type='text'>Is There a Disconnect in the P&amp;C Industry?</title><content type='html'>&lt;b&gt;A recent Survey conducted exclusively for National Underwriter by Deloitte looked at Broker Carrier relations!&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The survey of 1,596 qualified independent agents and brokers, large and small, pointed out a&amp;nbsp;consensus&amp;nbsp;of dissatisfaction with a number of relationships including "C&lt;b&gt;ommunication"&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having reviewed the producers input and the findings generated by the study, several ancillary thoughts were generated in regard to communications.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Between the Insurers and the Brokers&lt;/b&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;i&gt;Has anything changed?&lt;/i&gt; &amp;nbsp;Generally, Insurers' home offices have always sought out the field force opinion on a limited basis and then proceeded to do what had already been planned and designed. &amp;nbsp;In addition, as the study pointed out, the carriers generally reach out to the larger firms and big producers for their input. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Smaller firms and producers, as well as the specific needs of their small clients, are seldom solicited for input unless the carriers or their GAs and PAs recognize a "niche market" that could be broadly approached. &amp;nbsp;While in aggregate the production of the smaller firms is significant, and the breadth and depth in numbers of potential smaller accounts is significant, this marketplace is evaluated severally and has no ear. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;While it could be relatively simple for competitive carriers to capitalize on this disparity and reach out to this broader market, historically their has been little indication of a trend in that direction.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;While not evaluated in the study, we suggest another relationship that may suffer a lack of communications with some of the same misunderstanding.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Between the Brokers and the Clients and Potential Clients:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;i&gt;Has anything changed?&lt;/i&gt; &amp;nbsp;When it comes to marketing, prospecting, and client retention, the discussion often turns to becoming a better listener. &amp;nbsp;In nearly every Publication, Webinar, Seminar, Training Session, etc.&amp;nbsp;the emphasis is placed on asking open-ended questions and being "consultative". &amp;nbsp;While this technique sounds good, too often larger and smaller producers continue to approach their client or prospect, of any size, with a pre-conceived agenda rather then utilizing "needs based selling" .&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;While the P&amp;amp;C marketplace offers a wide variety of specialized programs, products and services that could open new doors and generate production, Brokers too often remain in their comfort zone of plans and carriers.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Brokers of all sizes have an opportunity to "mine" for the risk management needs of their clients and potential clients, large and small, and to communicate those needs back to the carriers. &amp;nbsp;If the client and prospects become more involved and feel they are part of the product creation and distribution channels, client retention, and even referrals could be on the increase.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;Please share your thoughts and experience!
